Manage HR Magazine: Specials Magazine

Shawn Minard works in people strategy, focusing on how organizations attract, develop, and retain talent aligned with business direction. His work spans leadership development, employee experience, and performance systems that connect day-to-day work with longer-term growth. Minard has also contributed to inclusion initiatives and partnered with leadership teams on workforce planning and culture design to support organizational effectiveness across complex global organizations. Initial Foundations in HR My perspective on balancing growth and culture has been shaped by nearly 25 years in human resources. I spent the first 20 years of my career in the technology industry, including a decade at E-Trade Financial and another decade at Ultimate Software. During that time, I worked across recruiting, HR systems, compensation and benefits and learning and development, gaining a broad understanding of how organizations attract, develop and retain talent. Five years ago, I joined Frazier & Deeter at a pivotal point in the firm’s evolution. The organization had a clear vision for expansion across the U.S. and globally and leadership recognized that achieving those ambitions would require investments in key operational functions, including HR, finance, marketing and technology. I built a best-in-class people-and-culture team capable of supporting that vision. What began as a team of two or three people has grown into a global people and culture function of approximately twenty professionals. Today, the team is organized across four core areas: recruitment, employee experience, learning and development and people operations. Together, these groups support talent acquisition, employee experience, leadership development, workforce analytics, systems management and acquisition integration. Building that foundation has been critical in preparing the organization for continued expansion while maintaining consistency across the employee experience. Aligning People

Employee Wellness

“Work-life balance is a myth. Life isn’t a set of compartments you balance. It’s a rhythm you orchestrate.” For Dr. Joe Oravecz, Ph.D. , that is where strong leadership begins. After spending more than twenty-five years in executive leadership, he knows the pressure that comes with being the person everyone looks to when there is no clear answer. Today, through his leadership framework, LifeFirst Harmony®, he helps leaders build healthier, more resilient workplace cultures. Years of leading through complex challenges and managing eight-figure budgets showed him what leadership can ask of people. Wanting to better understand that human side, he returned to graduate school to study clinical mental health counseling. LifeFirst Harmony® brings together that executive experience and clinical training. For Dr. Joe, it is not merely a wellness initiative, but “the operating system underneath” effective leadership.

Strengthening Organizations through Strategic People Leadership

People strategy becomes more important as organizations grow and change. Hiring, development, culture and leadership cannot sit apart from business decisions. They have to move together. In this edition of Manage HR, we look at leaders whose work connects the people side of the organization with the challenges businesses face every day.

Leading the edition is Shawn Minard, Chief People Officer at Frazier & Deeter, honored as the CPO of the Year 2026. Over five years, Minard helped build the firm’s people and culture function from a small team into a global operation. His focus has been on giving employees room to do their jobs, strengthening feedback and developing leaders while making sure the culture keeps pace with the firm’s growth.

Dr. Joe Oravecz, Ph.D., recognized for Top Mental Health Leadership Training Services 2026, brings more than 25 years of executive experience together with clinical mental health training. Through his LifeFirst Harmony® framework, he helps leaders pay attention to the signs of stress, develop healthier habits and lead with greater authenticity while maintaining professional boundaries.

The edition also features Lauren Vasilakopoulos, Director, HR NOAM and Global HR at IFF. After joining IFF in an entry-level HR role, she progressed into a position leading about 30 HR professionals supporting 5,000 employees across the U.S. and Canada. Her perspective covers manager accountability, listening to employees and building support for change before putting new policies into practice.

Brian McDermott, Senior Manager of Talent Development at MGM Resorts International looks at how experience can become a source of development. His time shadowing hotel operations showed him that learning often happens after the event, when employees reflect on what happened and consider what they could do differently next time.

Together, these perspectives show that effective people leadership is built into everyday decisions. We invite you to explore the edition and discover the ideas shaping stronger organizations and better workplaces.
