The trends that fleet managers need to keep up pace with the ever-changing industries of vehicle fleet and corporate mobility
FREMONT, CA: Last-mile delivery, long-haul trucks, car rental and leasing, and electric vehicles (EV) are among the fleet management and mobility trends in Latin America to keep an eye on, according to Eduardo Canicoba, AVP for business development in Latin America and Brazil country lead for multinational telematics firm Geotab. Despite the fact that last-mile delivery was already gaining popularity prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 1Q of 2020, the pandemic has pushed it even further, owing to the restrictions placed on people traveling, stated Mr. Canicoba to Fleet LatAm. For example, meal delivery is transported to homes, supermarkets, and small to mid-sized enterprises and the vehicles could be bicycles or motorcycles, as well as tiny cars or vans working in urban areas, he said, emphasizing that this is only one of the numerous industries that Geotab supports.

The second trend concerns long-haul trucks, particularly in Brazil, where highways account for around 70 percent of deliveries. According to the executive, one must keep in mind that Latin America lacks a lot of trains and that air travel is rather expensive. As a result, road travel is increasingly popular, owing to the cheaper cost. Mr. Canicoba also identified the car rental and leasing industry as a third trend as he observed more and more organizations opting to rent or lease their vehicles rather than purchase them.
Last but not least, the growing popularity of electric vehicles is a fourth trend that one should be aware of. BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is pushing the electric bus trend in Latin America, and other OEMs, such as Volvo, are following suit. According to the executive, Coca-Cola, Heineken, and Mercado Livre have all announced plans to shift to electric vehicles in Brazil. Geotab solutions work hand-in-hand in supporting all of these trends because its hardware can be attached to any type of vehicle. They track topics like security, optimization, scalability, and sustainability, among other things, Mr. Canicoba concluded.
