Onboarding is how new employees learn the skills, knowledge and habits they need to become effective and committed members of your small business team. This involves completing the necessary paperwork, engaging in hands-on training, socializing with co-workers and learning about the culture of the business. Onboarding can last the first week of the employee. It could last anywhere from a month to a year.
Here are some onboarding practices:
Understanding why Onboarding is Important
The onboard experience of an employee will affect how likely they are to remain with your company. According to a new survey, 69 percent of workers are more likely to stay with an organization for three years if they have had a really good onboard experience. In comparison, businesses with a standard onboard method see 50 percent higher efficiency from new hires than other companies.
Conversely, if an employee has a bad onboard experience, they will conclude that the company is under-managed and that they have made a mistake in taking the job first.
Onboarding Efforts Should Start before the Employee's First Day
The onboarding process should begin before your new recruit begins working in the office. To help ensure that you cover everything, create a checklist that includes what needs to be completed before work begins, within the first week, and beyond.
As soon as they have accepted the position, give them the necessary paperwork so that they don't have to waste their first day filling it out. This could include the form W-4, the form I-9 and the employee information form. Also, give them your staff manual so that you can answer some of their questions in advance. You can easily automate this process with a digital onboard system like Workful. Digital onboarding will improve accuracy and help you build a more intimate experience when you spend more time with your new recruit instead of waiting for them to fill out the questionnaire.
