Fu Xianling, Managing DirectorNew Concept Mandarin was established 26 years ago to address that reality differently.
Instead of approaching Mandarin through textbook-heavy academic instruction, it built its learning model around practical communication inside real business environments.
“Our clients need to use the language, not study the theory behind it,” says Fu Xianling, managing director. “That is why we focus first on listening and speaking instead of following a traditional university-style approach.”
Before training begins, it evaluates each learner’s professional environment and communication requirements. Legal teams may require negotiation terminology and contract-related communication, while finance, healthcare and insurance professionals often need industry-specific vocabulary for client interaction.
Based on that analysis, New Concept Mandarin customizes learning materials, flashcards and communication exercises for real-world workplace use rather than relying solely on standardized textbooks.
Mandarin presents unique learning challenges. Unlike English, spoken Mandarin and written Chinese characters are learned differently, requiring learners to develop pronunciation, listening and character recognition through separate learning patterns. To simplify that progression, New Concept Mandarin organizes its nine-level curriculum into Survival, Social and Professional stages, guiding learners from everyday workplace communication to negotiations, presentations and professional discussions conducted in Chinese.
Learning that Fits Professional Schedules
For busy professionals, New Concept Mandarin applies a Flipped Learning methodology designed around demanding work schedules.
Before class, learners review lesson materials through internally developed videos, apps and digital tools, which helps reduce the pressure many professionals associate with language learning by allowing them to build familiarity and confidence before entering the classroom. Classroom sessions then focus primarily on speaking practice and interaction instead of lengthy explanation. After class, learners continue reinforcing lessons through the same learning tools.

“It is a holistic approach,” says Xianling. “To help people acquire or master a language, it is not just one part.”
According to the company, the structure can improve learning efficiency by as much as three times compared to traditional classroom-heavy programs.
Maintaining Consistency through Internal Training
Many language training providers rely heavily on freelance teaching networks, whereas New Concept Mandarin develops its full-time trainers through structured methodology training, classroom practice, certification and ongoing development.
“We call them trainers rather than language teachers,” explains Xianling. “These people understand our system, understand our methodology and understand how clients learn most effectively in the classroom.”
Expanding beyond Business Mandarin
While Business Mandarin remains the company’s primary focus, New Concept Mandarin also provides Cantonese training for expatriates relocating to Hong Kong, where much of the workplace and social environment still operates in Cantonese.
As more multinational professionals settled in the region for the long term, many corporate clients also began asking whether the company could support their children's studies at international schools. That demand eventually led the company to develop IB, IGCSE and AP Chinese programs using its own research and internally developed course materials.
Supported by a team of more than 100 professional instructors, New Concept Mandarin has worked with multinational organizations across industries, including Apple, HSBC and many other multinational companies operating across the region. Some senior executives began the program with no Chinese background and later progressed to delivering presentations in Chinese during internal meetings after completing 300 hours of training.
Today, New Concept Mandarin continues to help multinational professionals communicate and operate more independently in Chinese-speaking business environments across APAC, an approach that earned the company recognition as the Top Chinese Learning Centre in APAC 2026.
