Policies alone are not sufficient to prevent workplace injuries. Educating employees about potential injuries and how they can be avoided is an important exercise to reduce workplace risks. With athletic trainers, organizations can facilitate preventative care, reducing time and money lost due to employee injuries.

Moore Wellness Systems and its team of certified athletic trainers are dedicated to ensuring the health and wellness of industrial workers. The company works with clients to provide care for their employees by evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating work-related and non-work-related injuries. As a wellness and health services provider, Moore Wellness Systems works with over 75 organizations in 28 states across the U.S.

In an interview with the editorial team of Manage HR, Brett Moore, Owner of Moore Wellness Systems, discusses how his company is working toward creating a change in workplace culture through education on injury prevention, ergonomics, nutrition, and general wellness.

Athletic Trainers for Industrial Injury Prevention

At Moore Wellness Systems, we have 52 certified athletic trainers to educate employees on how to avoid workplace injuries and promote overall wellness. Athletic trainers usually offer their services to high school, collegiate, and professional sports teams. However, you prevent, evaluate, and treat soft tissue injuries in an industrial environment the same way you would in athletics.

As athletic trainers, we are healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of musculoskeletal injuries and how they impact people on sports fields as well as in industrial environments. Our athletic trainers guide the employees in preventing these injuries.

Services Curated for a Variety of Industries

Most of our clients are from the pulp and paper industry, but we are expanding to the food processing arena. A major reason why these companies require our assistance is soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries at the workplace. They often lack the knowledge necessary to train employees or prevent these issues. They rely on our athletic trainers and their expertise to ensure early symptom reporting is observed and followed.

Our trainers encourage early symptom reporting so that the injury is addressed during its initial stage and taken care of. By doing so, we help these facilities drive down recordable injuries. As the first step, we educate employees about their overall health and wellness, which goes a long way in preventing injuries. We instruct them on what soft tissues and musculoskeletal injuries are, how to avoid them, and how to address them early. We also help these companies improve their safety records while keeping their employees healthy. Ensuring pain-free employees is the number one priority for us.
Importance of Employee Injury Prevention Education

Our services include easy-to-understand and positive education about overall health and wellness. We avoid focusing on alarming injury-related aspects and inciting fear. Instead, we make people feel optimistic about their health and teach them how they can improve it.

We educate them on improving workplace ergonomics, which helps decrease workplace injuries, boosts productivity, and reduces costs. At the same time, we train them on proper hydration, preventing soft tissue injuries, addressing diabetes-related issues, warming up before work, and cooling down with a stretching program after work. We make education fun and our programs easy to follow.

Wellness Programs Geared Toward Hope

We have regular and consistent wellness programs at each facility that address cardiovascular fitness, nutrition challenges, and weight loss to ensure overall employee well-being. This boosts their productivity and efficiency.

One of our programs addresses back and knee pain caused by hamstring flexibility challenges. We teach employees about the muscles at the back of our legs and how they affect our lower back and knees when they tighten. We then examine the employee’s hamstring flexibility and the ideal level of the same in relation to their age. This is followed by designing an eight-or-ten-week program where we help them with their hamstring range of motion. It is observed that pain is significantly reduced after this program.

Our programs also involve fitness and nutrition programs for the very beginner to the extremely fit employees.

Numbers on the Scale Do Not Lie

Numbers and data speak volumes about employee compliance with programs. A company that experiences a rise in injuries every year should first investigate why this is happening and how to reduce them.

To assess the effectiveness of our program, we perform a subjective evaluation with every client. We ask them to evaluate the work of our athletic trainers and collect feedback to improve ourselves. I’m proud that the Moore Wellness Systems team is continuously improving its skills and growing.

Driving Down Workplace Injury Numbers

A company we’ve worked with for about three years had a high recordable injury rate before our athletic trainers came onboard. They spent $790,000 a year on worker’s compensation costs for soft tissues and musculoskeletal injuries at work. By working with our athletic trainers, the company reduced work-related recordable injuries by more than 60 percent in the first year. Their worker’s compensation cost for soft tissue injuries went from $790,000 to less than $10,000.

Standing Apart from the Competition

We have been in the industry for almost 27 years. Our outstanding staff provides services based on what the companies need us to focus on. They appreciate our flexibility to focus on those areas. Our ability to act on client feedback and maintain consistent communication with employees enable us to tailor our programs in the best possible way.
