The members are the mission at Navy Federal Credit Union. In addition to being a member-centric organization that is available 24/7 to serve the military community, the credit union focuses heavily on being employee-powered and is committed to finding the right talent to serve its members.

Being "Members First, People Always" helps Navy Federal succeed in a competitive marketplace. The credit union takes pride in connecting military families with lifelong careers where they can feel a sense of belonging and thrive. Military spouses are an integral part of Navy Federal’s workforce, and over a quarter of team members have self-reported military affiliation.

As a member-driven, not-for-profit organization, Navy Federal’s Talent Acquisition and Recruitment team finds candidates that are passionate about serving military communities. Military spouses are great applicants for employment at Navy Federal because they understand the nuances of military life and live it.

The Truth About Military Spouse Hiring

From deployments to frequent moves, military families face unique circumstances. Many military spouses are discouraged in their career journey and fear employers will not accommodate their needs around job flexibility, cost of living adjustments and childcare coverage. Most military families need multiple income streams to live comfortably, as many Active Duty service members live at or below the federal poverty level, according to The Center for Naval Analyses.

“Military spouse employment is critical to military families,” said Britt Bloch, VP, Talent Acquisition Strategy & Recruitment at Navy Federal. “Helping them find meaningful employment is part of our mission. Because of their experiences, military spouses can provide exceptional service to our members.”

Navy Federal’s Military Affairs and Internal Mobility departments are trained to address misconceptions about military spouse reliability during deployment and relocations. Through the Internal Mobility Program, Navy Federal supports career continuity for military spouses and offers career advancement opportunities to diverse roles across the credit union. Like most employees, military spouses are looking for career growth and these programs support and guide their career journeys.

In addition to offering career development programs and flexibility through a hybrid workforce, Navy Federal focuses on building community and belonging for team members. The Military Community Network employee resource group is an invaluable network for military spouses, Veterans and all Navy Federal team members to share their ideas and advocate for processes that better serve members.

Military Hires Continue to Strengthen Navy Federal’s Workforce

Britt oversees the Military Affairs team, which focuses solely on hiring Veterans and military spouses to maximize their service skills. The team manages internal and external programs that support military spouses, like the Military Spouse Career Continuity Program (MSCCP), Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) and DoD Skillbridge.

MSCCP successfully places military spouses in roles where they can stay and grow with Navy Federal through deployments and relocations. The program has successfully placed more than 65 military spouses in fulfilling roles at Navy Federal. Similarly, MSEP connects military spouses with reputable employers, which Navy Federal has supported for over a decade.

Military spouses bring diverse skillsets, talents, experiences and military knowledge to help the credit union provide exceptional service to its members. Navy Federal focuses on skill-based hiring and leans into the potential military spouses bring to the job market. Britt continues to advocate for military spouse hiring and emphasizes the value they bring to the organization through employee spotlights, leadership communications and storytelling.

The Military Affairs team also targets talent across diverse communities to fill specialty roles. Through nonprofit partnerships, Navy Federal builds a strong talent pipeline for Veterans and military spouses. Likewise, the DoD Skillbridge Program pairs transitioning service-members with employers for 180 days of service. This program helps Veterans identify mentors in their career field and gain experience in the civilian workforce. Navy Federal has had over a 80% conversion rate with over 94 fellowship associates engaged in the program so far.

“Military hires bring so much skill and insight to Navy Federal,” said Britt. “They understand the unique facets of military life and why we serve. Our team members are the key to our success!”
